Is the ringing in your ears driving you crazy? Do you crave relief? Well you’re not alone. According to the American Tinnitus Association, there are over 50 million Americans who suffer from Tinnitus or in other words the debilitating buzzing, ringing or hissing in the ears that ruins lives. Did you know too that tinnitus and diet are closely linked? What you eat can have a dramatic effect on the volume and frequency of the tinnitus noises you are hearing. As you read this article you will discover tinnitus diet tips-what to eat to get relief from ringing ears:
The first tinnitus diet tip is to eat whole, freshly prepared foods, plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables, olive oil, eggs, protein, fish, poultry, whole grain bread, pasta, cheese and yogurt. In fact, eating the Mediterranean diet which includes all of these foods is thought to be excellent for getting relief from ringing ears. Try to eat organic if you can and when avoid cows’ milk dairy products. Eat goats’ milk products instead. As a rule of thumb, eat food that is as close to its natural state as possible.
Make sure your tinnitus diet includes vitamin A, B1,6 and 12, C Iron and Zinc. Zinc is known to be particularly effective in providing relief from ringing ears. It can be found in oysters, lamb, pumpkin seeds, eggs and beans. Include between 2 and 5 mg. of Manganese found in foods like bananas, celery, green leafy vegetables, beans and nuts.
As you follow your tinnitus diet, keep a log of what you are eating. If any food you are eating makes the ringing in your ears worse, cut it out completely. As you continue this log you will begin to notice what foods you eat are good for you and which increase the noise you hear.
Avoid junk food completely-fast foods, pre packaged or processed foods. They contain high levels of salt, saturated fats and flavour enhancers. All of them negatively affect tinnitus and make it louder. If you want to get relief from ringing ears you have to try to promote blood flow to the inner ear. Excess salt however restricts blood vessels, increases blood pressure and reduces blood flow to the eyes, ears and brain. Increased blood pressure is directly linked to tinnitus loudness. Saturated fats increase bad cholesterol, decrease good cholesterol, increase triglycerides and lead to atherosclerosis, which again restricts blood flow to the ear and makes tinnitus worse. Finally flavour enhancers such as Monosodium Glutamate is a particular cause of tinnitus and is therefore a “no no” in your tinnitus diet. It is broken down by the body as Glutamate. Glutamate floods the neuro-receptors in the auditory pathway and excites them to a point where they fire continuously.
Food allergies can cause inflammation in the ear or even infection in the ear which can then aggravate tinnitus symptoms. The most common foods that cause allergies are wheat, soybean products, milk, eggs and peanuts. Again keeping a log of what you eat will help you to know if your tinnitus gets worse as a result of eating these foods.
Finally your tinnitus diet should not include any caffeinated drinks such as cola, coffee and tea as they create unnatural highs and lows which cause stress, anxiety and depression in some people. In fact, diet drinks are one of the worst enemies of all as they contain the artificial sweetener Aspartame. This causes the neurons to fire repeatedly until they become depleted and die. Tinnitus noises become louder.
